| WTM began as a small garage shop, where Howard Patterson made small parts for the US military during WWII. With only a bench lathe and a drill press, he was able to deliver on time and with a precision that aided the war effort. Postwar expansion led to incorporation as Washington Tool and Machine Co., Inc. in 1957. An expanding base of satisfied customers supported the addition of precise machine tools and skilled employees, as Howard Patterson, Jr. succeeded his father as owner and president in 1969. WTM supplied a great variety of parts and equipment to a number of firms, notably those in the nuclear power generation, shoe mold forming, and general machine and fabrication industries.
Through the 1970's, WTM fabricated and machined a range of products for several steel rolling mill customers. Parts became ever larger and heavier, but the required tolerances were often relatively close, so WTM added larger machine tools, measuring instruments, and the requisite skills to flourish in the business of supplying the steel industry. The 1985 move to our present 130,000 sq.ft. facility was necessitated by the demand for more manufacturing space and higher-capacity overhead cranes. Acquisition of a new NC lathe and NC mill greatly expanded our capabilities, and set the stage for our first very large NC roll-type lathe. A rapid expansion in roll turning services followed, as several additional CNC roll lathes were installed. Complete roll machining capabilities were developed through the 1990s, with the addition of first-operation turning equipment, milling machines, precision roll grinding equipment, and a host of inspection and finishing services.
WTM has also thoroughly equipped for the needs of the steel ring industry, with the ability to turn both small and large ring-type parts. The number of our vertical boring mills increased in response to customer demand through the 1990s, and is now one of the largest in the region. Recent additions include two CNC ring turning chuckers and a brand-new large CNC drilling and milling machine. Additional expansions of machine tools, technical capacities and degree of customer services are currently being planned. WTM management, along with the third generation of the Patterson family, look forward to continuing to provide customers with increased levels of excellent machining services in the future.
